Clutter is an insidious thing. It starts slowly and builds. Sometimes our world gets cluttered due to small homes and spaces and sometimes clutter is due to a lack of organization. Often, it is a bit of both. If you feel that some or part of your physical space is cluttered, these easy tips can help you make this year your year to clean up the mess and declutter.
Take Inventory and Make Goals
Look around your home and make a list of the areas you feel need to be decluttered. Then set a deadline for cleaning each space and set reasonable goals that you can achieve without feeling overwhelmed. If you attempt to tackle every part of your house in one weekend, there is a pretty good chance you will give up. Your plan should work around your schedule and plan just a few hours or an afternoon at a time.
Start with Closets and Drawers
Before you declutter the areas that are visible, start with the areas that are not. Clean out your closets and start bagging the clothing you do not wear anymore. Organize clothing by season so it is easier to store if necessary. Decluttering drawers can actually be relatively stress-free. Take a drawer out and empty the contents on a sheet and begin the organizing while watching your favourite tv show.
Remember Your Kitchen
The kitchen is often the busiest room in the house. It is often the most cluttered too. And, although it may be the biggest clutter to tackle, it can be the best place to get organized and stay organized. Start with your kitchen table. If it doubles as the drop spot for all bills and homework, then clean that up. Get files for your bills and put away all the extra homework papers. Then organize your kitchen cupboards. Get rid of all the mismatched mugs and think carefully about your gadgets. That microwave spaghetti cooker you bought four years ago seemed like the dream machine. But, be honest, have you used it even once in the last two years? With organized cupboards, you will have the space to declutter your counters, putting spices and utensils away. Extra space on your counters makes for much easier and stress-free cooking.
Be Vigilant
After you have gone to the effort of decluttering parts of your home, take the extra time to keep your space organized. This does take discipline, but having an organized home makes it worth it.
