The holidays are just around the corner and for many of us it means a house full of family and friends coming from far and wide. Whether you are a seasoned host or are having guests for the first time in your home, a little planning now will really help with the stress during the holidays.
- Declutter Common Areas
There is nothing that alleviates stress more than an organized space. Start with the main rooms of your home and start the process now. Get rid of the excess papers and mail cluttering your tables and put anything that doesn’t belong there away. Put those summer sandals sitting in the foyer away. You can pull them out in February when you head south for that much-needed break.
- Organize Toys
If you have kids, then you know how overwhelming toys can get. Don’t wait till the last minute to organize their toys. Make a giveaway pile of toys that can be donated. Any toys that can be re-homed will be greatly appreciated by shelters and getting the kids involved can be a great learning experience in helping them share their “things”. It can be very rewarding for a child to give up a previously loved toy.
- Organize Your Kitchen
When it comes to organizing, the kitchen is often the most overlooked room in the house. Premium real estate on your counter and cupboards get cluttered with gadgets and products. Start with your counter and work through your drawers and cupboards. If you haven’t used a gadget in over a year, chances are its value isn’t worth the space it is taking up. Donate them. Go through your pantry and make space. Non- perishable food items are always welcome and especially during the holidays.
- Plan Sleeping Arrangements
If you are having guests stay for a few days or longer, plan the sleeping arrangements now. If the kids are bunking up, prepare them for it. Make certain all your linens are ready to go with the extra sheets and towels freshly laundered. You don’t want to be freshening up your linens the day before your guests arrive.
- Consider Short Term Self-Storage
A self- storage unit can be a life saver during the holidays. If you don’t already have a storage unit, renting a small unit during the holidays is extremely economical and can help you declutter your home of possessions that are not needed during the holidays but are not ready for the giveaway pile. One car load of boxes to your storage unit can make a world of difference in your home.
Christmas is only a month away; prepare now and enjoy your guests with way less stress.
