Whether you’re moving down the street or across the country – moving can be a challenge. It can quickly become overwhelming if you do not know what to expect or if you do not plan properly. If you are moving soon, we recommend trying these five things before your move. They will help prepare you for moving day, so you will be less overwhelmed and a little more prepared.
Before You Move: Arrange Movers
The first thing you should do is decide who you want to use to move your things or if you will be moving yourself. If you are booking with a moving company, make sure to book the moving date in advance. You don’t want to try to book a moving company last minute, as there might not be any availability. It may also be a good idea to shop around for different quotes and services – especially if your move has specific requirements.
Before You Move: Plan Ahead
Next, go ahead and set some things aside that you know you will need once your move is complete. When you get to your new place, all of your belongings will still be packed up and difficult to get to. It will take you some time to get everything unpacked, so make sure you have a bag packed with some essentials like toiletries and extra changes of clothes to last you a few days until you get more settled. You can also use the days leading up to your move to eat whatever food you have in your pantry so that you have less to move.
Before You Move: Pack Ahead of Time
Even in the situation where you are hiring movers, there are some things you will want to pack ahead of time. Make a list of what those things are, and then set a goal each day to pack a certain number of boxes. Packing a little bit each day will decrease any stress or feelings of being overwhelmed.
Before You Move: Switch Services
Make sure to switch over all of your services before your move. This could include your cable and Internet, water, electric, sewage, trash pickup, etc. Basically, any service that is provided at your current address will need to be switched. Contact the companies in enough time for them to get the services switched over to your new address so that you can be sure to have everything ready to go once you are in your new home.
Before You Move: Change Your Address
Finally, change your address. This can be done at your local post office or online through the Canada Post website. Visit the Canada Post website to learn more about Mail Forwarding (https://www.canadapost.ca/cpc/en/personal/receiving/manage-mail/mail-forwarding.page). Along with the postal service change – you can also switch a number of utilities addresses through the Manitoba Address Change website. Complete these task at least 4-6 weeks prior to your move, as it will take some time to forward your mail to your correct address.
